After inauguration of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), approval of setting up of an Indian Institute of Management(IIM) at Jammu has added another feather in Jammu’s cap.
Despite a decades-long turmoil, Jammu and Kashmir has been keeping pace with education with gross enrolment figures higher than the national average.
The efforts of senior BJP leaders in general and Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Kumar Singh in particular brought fruits after the approval to setting up of an IIM at Jammu was announced as a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development package for Jammu and Kashmir.
On the recommendations of State BJP leaders, the Centre has laid emphasis on creating centres of excellence in higher education and IIM Jammu is a step towards that direction.
It is mention that the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today approved setting up of an IIM at Jammu.
The IIM project will involve an investment of Rs 61.90 crore for initial four years from 2016 to 2020. Initially, the IIM will be running its activities in a temporary premises.
On August 6, Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar had inaugurated the transit campus of IIT here and 90 students have been enrolled at IIT, Jammu for the first academic session.
