State BJP Spokesperson Prof. Virender Gupta expressed his anguish on the report of J&K State Vigilance Commission (SVC) tabled by Minister for R&B, Naeem Akhtar in the State Legislative Council revealing that 8935 enquires are pending with the vigilance officers of different government departments for the last over nine years. He said that report is an aspersion on the working of the Vigilance Officers and the functioning of state government headed by Omar Abdullah. He said that vigilance department is an important component of the state machinery that ensures transparent, corruption free and responsible state administration. He added that it becomes imperative on the part of the government to guarantee efficient working of the State Vigilance Organization. He pointed that therefore, it is the need of the hour for the government to take note of the report of State Vigilance Commission and tighten the vigilance officers of various departments to make it mandatory to submit the reports of the enquires those are referred to them, in specified time. “On non submission of the report about enquires referred to them in the scheduled time a mechanism is required to be developed to punish the guilty vigilance officers and it should be presumed that such officers are defending those against whom the enquiries are asked for,” the Spokesperson Said.
The spokesperson said that proper functioning of the Vigilance organization and punishing those involved in corruption cases or of dereliction of their duties, within a specified time period, is essential to make the administration and public servants responsible to the citizens of the state and it proves a deterrent for the guilty ones.
Prof. Virender asked the State Vigilance Commission for the early completion of the cases pending against the ex-ministers and bureaucrats who engaged in corrupt practices when they were at the helm of affairs during the previous governments. He added that the action against them going to put the present Ministers, MLAs and bureaucrats on their toes and generate a fear psychosis in them, in case they involve themselves in foul means.
Prof. Virender demanded that State Vigilance Commission needs to be empowered to initiate suo-moto action against the Minister, bureaucrats indulging in corrupt practice.
