Quit smoking to lead healthy life, make nation strong: Yudhvir Sethi
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State Vice President Yudhvir Sethi today said that amongst lakhs of people who die of cancer every year about 65% get the disease due to consumption of tobacco which is an alarming situation. He said a healthy society is the outcome of healthy mind and a healthy body for which smokers must resolve to quit smoking during this ‘World No Tobacco Day’ that is being observed all over the world and in Jammu as well.
Mr Sethi was speaking after inaugurating a Week-long programme on World No Tobacco Day organised by The Art of Living JnK Chapter and Indian Dental Association (IDA), Jammu Central Branch in collaboration with Indira Gandhi Government Dental College, Jammu at Government Primary School, Pull Tawi Ware House.He said ‘Swasth Sehat, Samridh Bharat’ (Healthy Body, Healthy India) slogan given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also aimed at getting away with such practices of smoking.
Yudhvir Sethi said, “God forbid if any person of any poor or middle class family is caught up with deadly disease like cancer due to smoking the entire family is ruined both physically as well as financially”. Keeping in view the sensitivity of situation, people must quit smoking and lead a healthy life not only for themselves but for their families as well. He said that on the eve of World No Tobacco Day, the new BJP government in Assam has even banned smoking in all public transport vehicles which is a welcome step.
Yudhvir Sethi said that in coming days we intend to engage 1000 people and try to make them quit smoking to make them lead a good life and also ensure clean environment and better air quality for public health. He added that companies promoting smoking must also lead by example and switch over to better business that doesn’t involve people’s health. He asked those present on the occasion to launch a collective fight against use of tobacco and get the society rid of this menace.
He appreciated the IDA, AOL JnK Chapter and IGGDC officials besides school children and staff in launching such campaigns from their institution. He appreciated the activities planned by the organisors like that of patient awareness, screening and motivation, poster making competition, walkathon during this week long programme. He hoped that during the week initiative free health camps and awareness rallies will help people lead a healthy life and quit smoking.
Dr Ritesh Gupta, President IDA Jammu Central in his address said that 31st May every year is observed as “World No Tobacco Day” and this year’s awareness drive was started at Government Primary School, Pull Tawi Ware House Jammu. The programme was followed by awareness lecture, pledge by general public students and poster competition for the students of the school.

TejasvI and Ajay Kapoor of Art of Living (Jammu Chapter) extended their support for the cause and resoled to stand by the IDA. Prominent amongst others who were also present on the occasion include Rakesh Kak, Dr. Manik Sharma, Anil Moom, Govind Sareen, Ashwini Sharma, Arun Sethi, Bittoo , Lalit Sharma, Ajesh, Ramesh Kumar, Adv. Dheeraj Sharma, Sunny Dogra, Sngh, Surinder Singh and Harjeet Singh. Exe. Committee Member of school sushil kumar was also present.
