BJP held a programme on “Save Democracy Day” on the 42nd year of the Emergency imposed by the then Congress Government to remember and discuss the events occurred during that period in the programme held at the State Office, Trikuta Nagar. State President & MLA Sat Sharma, Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Nirmal Singh, MLC Ashok Khajuria, State General Secretaries Harinder Gupta, Dr. Narinder Singh and Pawan Khajuria, Senior Leader Chander Mohan Sharma, MLC Ramesh Arora, Shiv Kumar Gupta, Murari Lal and S. S. Bijral were the main speakers who threw light on the events of the period during the black days of democracy.
Sat Sharma, while addressing the gathering, said that the social and political activists along the general public fought tooth and nail the undesired war unleashed on the public of India by the then Congress Government led by then PM Indira Gandhi. Remembering the role of everyone including the mothers and sisters in the period of distress as they had to bear the burden of that period for a period of around of two years, he said that in a democratic set up of India, the introduction of Emergency was a catastrophe. He also threw light on the events of those days, that led to the imposition of Emergency. He said that, even the Court disqualified the then PM. Indira Gandhi from the position of Member of Parliament. Even the media was totally gagged, he added. Dr. Nirmal Singh, while addressing all the leaders and the activists present, said that the period will always be considered as the black chapter in the history of India and the people of India have taken tough lessons from the experiences, which they have undergone in that period. He stressed that, the basic ideology of India lies in the philosophy of “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah” and “Sarv Dharam Sambhav” and said that the tradition of India teaches us to accept all irrespective of their beliefs or the differences in their way of livings. He said that the Congress tried to stake independent claim on every struggle fought and keeping the legacy, the then PM Indira Gandhi unperturbed by the opposition to the undemocratic ways introduced by her, resorted to imposition of “Emergency”, which later resulted in the decline of Congress.
MLAs Rajesh Gupta, Dr. Gagan Bhagat, Dr. Krishan Lal Bhagat, MLC AjatShatru and party leaders Parmod Kapahi, Karan Singh, Mamta Singh, Yudhvir Sethi, Anuradha Charak, Naresh Dogra, Arvind Gupta and other prominent members of civil society were also present during the programme.
